On 2023-07-17 the Kurdistan Animal Protection Organization (KAPO) received a distressing report from an animal lover regarding a local pet shop located on Bakhtyary Street in Erbil. The shop had been left unattended for five days, leaving the animals inside without food, water, or proper care. Upon receiving the report, KAPO immediately dispatched a team to investigate the situation.
Upon arrival, the team discovered 25 cats and 7 dogs in dire conditions. Tragically, two cats had already died due to starvation and dehydration. The surviving animals were severely malnourished and dehydrated, with some attempting to eat empty plastic plates in desperation. The shop was filled with a foul odor due to accumulated animal waste, which had been left uncleaned for five days. Compounding the situation, the animals were exposed to extreme summer heat, further endangering their health.
KAPO reported to the +964 channel and acted swiftly to address the crisis. The team cleaned and sanitized the premises, provided food and water to the animals, and administered medical care to those in critical condition. Simultaneously, KAPO reported the incident to the relevant government authorities, urging them to take legal action against the pet shop owner for negligence and animal cruelty.
This incident underscores the importance of vigilance and prompt action in cases of animal neglect. KAPO remains committed to protecting the welfare of animals and holding individuals accountable for such inhumane practices.
